#reverb10 3: Moment

Pick one moment during which you felt most alive this year. Describe it in vivid detail (texture, smells, voices, noises, colors).

I was on a staff retreat at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Centre. It was pretty. I guess. I’m not one for looking at nature. It was quite affordable. I did like that part. And there was free internets. You can’t go wrong with that. Anyway, part of our staff retreat was taking a survey. I think it was to gauge the quality of our spiritual life at our church. In this survey, they would ask questions, “What was the most…”, “What was the best…”, etc.

I don’t work like that. I don’t have ‘mosts’, or ‘bests’. I enjoy a lot of things to the fullest. So I’m going to describe my sandwich.

I don’t like cheese.

I don’t like processed meat.

I don’t even eat bread that much. When my fam and I took the trip to Germany (which you can find here), our diet consisted of a lot of bread and cheese. That was difficult for me.

However, a long time ago, when I used to volunteer at Sanctuary doing sandwich runs, we would hand out Bologna sandwiches with those nasty, flat, fake cheese slices. They were quite easy to make!

Two pieces of bread. Slap on bologna. Slap on nasty cheese slice. Whammo! Done!

I didn’t care for them, they contained elements that weren’t conducive to my palate.

Mmmmm... chemicals
That is, until I tried one. And… I liked it. A lot.

And just this past month, I have rekindled my love for bologna sandwiches. I don’t know why I like them. But there is something about the taste, the texture, the way the bread sticks to the top of your mouth, possibly helped by the combination of meat preserves and plastic cheese, but as your tongue desperately tries to free the pasty concoction, it enhances the flavour and you can’t wait to take the next bite.

I love you, bologna sandwich.

I can’t spell ‘sandwich’. Every time I do, my finger automatically puts in an ‘h’. “Sandwhich”. And then I have to go back and correct it. Cuts into typing time, especially in this post.

I still love you, bologna sandwich.

I use Mozzarella cheese though. A little less nasty.
