50/90 – Write 50 Songs in 90 Days & how I am not doing it
Mid June has not been productive. Neither has early July.
But 50/90 has started up and I am remembering the energy of FAWM.
“This is the club. Each summer, 50/90 forges a collaborative community where musicians of all walks and skill levels write a slew of new music material (50 songs) in only three months. That’s roughly one tune every other day. Participants are a mix of music professionals, students, homemakers, and folks who work day-jobs but rock nightclubs.”
Now I am resisting doing 50/90 because it takes up a lot of time. This is not a negative slant! Playing Civilization takes up a lot of time and can go into the wee hours of the night . I enjoy every minute of it. That’s what it is like for me with these crazy song writing challenges.
I can’t help myself.
And the FAWM community is trying to sucker me into doing more songs. They are enablers. Dealers and pushers of music creativity. And I, wanting just one little taste, have agreed to collaborate on a few songs.
11 songs, I do believe.
And so last night, I finished off an arrangement for a pirate song made by Billy Sea! I went onto Youtube and started researching pirate songs. It did bring me to a song from Monkey Island, flooding me with a desire to play more games, but I didn’t end up using it. Nor did I use the Pirate Song which seems to be quite popular, but I don’t know anything about it, other than I’ve heard it many times.
But, in the end, I stuck with Pirate Song (Salty Dog) – Flogging Molly . I liked the arrangement. But it’s hard to do a fiddle, sadly enough. So I took the tune that Billy Sea made and tried to recreate the same arrangement. I would have changed it up a bit more, adding in a chorus and mixing in other pirate song references, but it had taken me almost 3 hours to do what I had so I finished it.
Then, after that, I wrote some lyrics for Cow Exchange. It’s a simple love song and I may be able to add it to my Geek Love Songs v2.0 album. Huzzah!
But it’s a dangerous path I tread. I log onto the forums, I log onto the chat. I have resisted listening to songs but I know I shall do that soon.
And why am I so reluctant to get involved? Because my poor family bears the brunt of my addiction.
“Daddy, I want hugs.”
“Quiet! I’m composing here. Don’t interrupt the FLOW!”
Well, ok, not once have my kids asked for hugs. Rotten, spoiled kids. I offer them hugs every three minutes and they roll their eyes at me. They’re not even teenagers yet! It’s not like I’m giving them sloppy wet kisses like they used to give me when they were 1 year old! Drooling, milk-breath, messes they were. Yuck.
I digress. But all this intense focus does take up time and energy. And I stay up till 1am or later each night.
Who knows how late I’ll stay up tonight. I have another collab to work on.
